Your Ideas are proud to present..

…A series of short Digital Stories produced by members of Your Ideas Redditch on the subject of Sex and Relationships.

As some of you may already know we received funding from Worcestershires Health Improvement Fund to increase opportunities for local youngsters to take part in positive activities. This enabled us to run taster sessions with young people doing graffiti, sports, art, games and much more. We incorporated Sex and Relationships Education into these fun activities and additionally created our own SRE resource in the form of a DVD with film maker Chris Bradley.

The DVD resource holds 3 short Digital Stories, each an incredibly open, brutally honest and deeply intimate interview with 3 of our members looking at their opinions on Sex and Relationships. Aimed at youngsters it is the perfect antidote to the often cliche’ ‘how to wear a condom’ and ‘don’t have sex until you are at least 40’ style DVD’s created for the under 16 market.

Instead of giving ready formed polished opinions and facts to the audience, it will challenge them to form their own opinions. The aim is to use the DVD as a discussion point to encourage youngsters to talk openly about Sex and Relationships in safe, nonjudgemental environment with adults and or peers that they trust.

We are currently planning the next steps of how we are going to develop and distribute the resource so look out for updates!

Fix Up Look Sharp!

As you may of heard in previous posts, two of our awesome regulars applied for a community cash award from the Prince’s Trust to work with other local youngsters, they named the project ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’.

This funding came from the Ben Kinsella Trust who are working in partnership to support youngsters aged 14-25 to set up their own project to help promote anti-gun, knife and gang violence messages to their local community. Our young people are running a series of workshops creating planters and other wooden goodies to be donated to Noahs Ark Nursery in Matchborough. They wanted to promote positive activities for young people while raising awareness of the reality of gun and knife crime in the UK and the affect it has on young peoples lives.

Risk assessing ready for the sessions!

Redditch Young Advisors Training

3 of our brilliant youngsters attended the Worcestershire Young Advisor Training Day on the 20th May at Upton Warren, this meant an early morning wake up call of 9.30am on a Sunday morning, ouch!

The morning involved learning about the commissioning of positive activities money in Redditch for young people. One of the activities was to list all the problems in their local areas…

They then had to look at how to solve these problems with the commissioning money available. We were so proud of our youngsters as they thought of very valid problems and some excellent solutions, not bad for a sunday 😉

So our beautiful Art Angel Gabriel is nearing completion after the gold spraying of his wings this week thanks to Jez from our Arrow Vale group.

He is also sporting some very abstract and glamourous underwear which we are sure will soon be seen on catwalks around the world!

All he needs now is some more sparkly detail on his wings to make him even more amazing and he will be ready to be displayed as part of our Art Club exhibition in a public display space in Redditch. We can’t wait!

Core to the way we work is listening to the people we work with and those we help. We believe everyone should have a voice so its great when we get a piece to put on the Blog. But remember the opinions here are those of the person and they don’t necessarily reflect Your Ideas’s policies or views.

Easter Art Club Bonanza

So we are back in the centre after the madness of our Easter holiday art sessions, after a big tidy and sort out we are back to some sort of normality!

Our Easter art sessions comprised of 3 consecutive days of art activities with local youngsters to create masterpieces for our upcoming display as funded by Grants for Arts.

Artist Rich Inwood shared his graffiti skills with the youngsters by constructing a huge mural using 4 large boards, copious amounts of paint and lots of time.

As you can imagine the centre looked like it had been hit by a colourful tornado by the end of the week and we had created some incredible work. Over 300 photos were taken as the camera was passed around the centre over the 3 days, check out the slideshow below to see what we got up to…

Art Club head to Hollywood (Bowl of course)

The end of term for the Art Club can only mean one thing… time for a reward trip for their hard work at Your Ideas.

As there is no funding available through the Art Club grant for reward trips, we have to find something fun but cheap! Luckily for us the staff at the Hollywood Bowl in Great Park Rubery were very accommodating and offered us a great group discount for our visit.  Continue reading
