We’ve moved!

As some of you may know we have been in the process of moving to a larger purpose built centre for the best part of a year. On Monday 29th July it eventually happened! (With the help of many hardworking volunteers and a big van)

We have moved from our premises in Matchborough Centre to the Matchborough East Community Centre.

It’s June already?!

Apologies for the lack of posts recently, we have doubled our workload this year and have really struggled to find time to keep the blog up to date!

The two big projects that we have been getting off the ground this year are –

-Support Across the Spectrum which is funded by The Big Lottery Fund and enables us to work with young people aged 15-25 who have Asperger’s to reduce social isolation.

On your marks, get set, BLOG!

As part of our ever expanding Support Across the Spectrum project funded by the Big Lottery our members have created their very own blog. It is for our Spectrum members to upload reviews of anything and everything!

Spectrum member and volunteer Tom is the webmaster who created the blog, writes reviews and also supports other members to not only write their own reviews but teaches them how to upload them too.

The reviews are generally about computer games, movies and music at the moment as that’s what interests our members. They are all written reviews at the moment but we are currently working on some video interview style reviews too, thanks to our new video camera donated by Phil Haslam of HSL Roadside.

We now have 4 reviewers who are uploading to the site and already have more who are interested in getting involved.

If you or anyone you know has Aspergers and would be interested in getting involved then contact us for more information – kayleighfitzgerald@yourideas.org.uk or 01527 502624

Prevention is better than cure!

We were recently visited by Dr Simon Murphy who is a candidate for the new Police and Crime Commissioner for West Midlands and Local Labour Councillor John Fisher.

They found out about our lovely little project and how offering positive activities to youngsters in a setting like ours can help reduce the chances of becoming disengaged and at risk of offending, which can be a cheaper and more effective solution in the long run.

Extreme Makeover – Your Ideas Redditch Website Edition

As mentioned in previous posts we have had big changes at Your Ideas this summer/autumn due to projects finishing and new projects on the horizon so we have had a makeover on our website to reflect this. It is up to date, easier to navigate and looks even better than before.

It won’t replace the blog as we think they compliment each other, with the website being more information based and the blog great for day to day updates.

If you want more information about the project then check it out – http://www.yourideas.org.uk/

Children in Need donations making a difference in Redditch

It’s that time of year again when people start raising funds for the much publicized annual Children in Need campaign. Our project is no different and this year our Spectrum Club members are planning a Halloween party fundraiser.

We have been incredibly fortunate as a project to have benefited financially from this campaign when we received 3 year funding for our ever popular Spectrum Club. Continue reading

Quick update of art works in progress!

A well overdue quick snapshot of some of the artwork that our young people are currently been working on…

-As we have not been back open long after the summer holidays we are just getting out teeth stuck into some new art projects. The main one being our next window display – as you can see we have started work on our paper mache scarecrow head an hands already.

-Long time member Lewis has started an ambitious creation using a recycled spray can.

-Other artwork includes large cartoon drawings, portraits of musicians, and tattoo inspired pieces.

Long overdue update from Your Ideas

We are now back in the centre after a well needed summer break.

It was slightly manic before we broke up for summer as always, especially with the end of term trips for each group. The photos are too good not to share though so I will do a belated post soon.

Over the summer we have had a few big changes to the project with the school group ceasing for the meantime as the school is going through big changes as it becomes an academy.

Our With It Group for residents aged over 50 has been successfully handed over to Alan Walker who will now be running the group. The group will continue on the same day and will still run from our centre.

Our ever popular Art Club for local youngsters will continue to run as usual with the youngsters having the opportunity to create art work to be displayed at the newly refurbished Abbey Stadium, or try their hand at creating something truly terrifying for our notorious Halloween window display.

During our closure a team of volunteers snuck in and decorated the toilets and paint room which was in dire need of some work as they were dark and miserable! I’d like to thank Ryan Edwards, Jordan Cooke, Mick Fitzgerald, Richard Underwood and Michael Fitzgerald for giving up their time, skills and materials to help out.

Before…
After…

As always we are waiting to hear back from various funders that we have applied for funding from so we are excited and nervous to see how that will shape the future of the project and how we develop. Cross your fingers and toes for us and we will update when we hear more!

With great changes to youth provision in Redditch due to the massive cuts in the statutory centre we are sad to hear that  2 of the 3 council run youth centres have now closed and the decision on the third is still up in the air. This has put a massive dent in Redditch youth provision which makes it ever more interesting to see how the Worcestershire County Council will choose to spend the small amount of money left allocated to commission young peoples services. Fingers crossed we are successful on our bid!

Think that is all for now, thanks for reading 🙂

Your Ideas are proud to present..

…A series of short Digital Stories produced by members of Your Ideas Redditch on the subject of Sex and Relationships.

As some of you may already know we received funding from Worcestershires Health Improvement Fund to increase opportunities for local youngsters to take part in positive activities. This enabled us to run taster sessions with young people doing graffiti, sports, art, games and much more. We incorporated Sex and Relationships Education into these fun activities and additionally created our own SRE resource in the form of a DVD with film maker Chris Bradley.

The DVD resource holds 3 short Digital Stories, each an incredibly open, brutally honest and deeply intimate interview with 3 of our members looking at their opinions on Sex and Relationships. Aimed at youngsters it is the perfect antidote to the often cliche’ ‘how to wear a condom’ and ‘don’t have sex until you are at least 40’ style DVD’s created for the under 16 market.

Instead of giving ready formed polished opinions and facts to the audience, it will challenge them to form their own opinions. The aim is to use the DVD as a discussion point to encourage youngsters to talk openly about Sex and Relationships in safe, nonjudgemental environment with adults and or peers that they trust.

We are currently planning the next steps of how we are going to develop and distribute the resource so look out for updates!
