September snapshot!

Apologies for the lack of posts the last few months, we have had a manic time to say the least. As you will know from previous posts we have just moved our project to a new premises which has taken up a huge amount of effort. We are now  settling in so hopefully we will have more time to keep the blog updated!

So what has been going on at Your Ideas?…

We have started decorating our new centre with help from volunteers Jordan Cooke, Carl Cooke, Ryan Edwards, Ed Little, Mick Fitzgerald and Michael Fitzgerald. We still have a long way to go but we’ve made a good start!

The Re-Start football project funded by Sport England has been a great success with local youngsters but has now come to the end of its funding. Due to the great feedback from the members we have created the opportunity for youngsters to continue to play football as part of the PAZ project. It will be on Thursday evenings 5.45pm-8.15pm meeting at Matchborough Centre.

The Positive Activities sessions in our new centre are taking shape and we are now running 3 sessions a week. We are running project nights where young people can take part in activities and earn reward points! There are limited spaces so to get involved contact Pauline on 01527 502624 or pop into the centre. The project nights are Mondays 6.30-8pm for over 13s and Wednesdays 6.30-8pm for year 8-9s. The Thursday football sessions as mentioned above are also part of the project. All sessions are free!!

The 50+ With It Group which is ran by Alan Walker received funding for their fortnightly Friday sessions which has enabled them to continue running the group after summer and also buy a rather fancy bingo machine!

The Spectrum Orange Group has really picked up pace in the last year and we have been getting more referrals than we can currently take. The funding for this group runs out in January 2014 so we are currently in the process of reapplying to Children in Need to continue and expand the group so keep your fingers crossed!

Our Spectrum Red group enjoyed an adrenaline fueled trip to Blackwell Court in the summer holidays where they tried their hand at archery and a high rope activity. Staff even gave it a go with the support of the young people!

We held an introductory gym course throughout the summer holidays for Spectrum Red members who were interested in improving their fitness. The course was 4 weeks of personal training with trained staff showing members how to use the gym equipment safely and effectively and how to behave appropriately whilst in the gym. The aim was for them to be able to access the gyms independently after the course which we achieved with most members now using the gym regularly.

This summer one of our Spectrum Orange members and his family challenged themselves to walk Ben Nevis to kindly raise much needed funds for the group. They completed the walk and are currently collecting in the sponsorship money so we will announce the total when we find out. We want to thank the Mills family for their efforts as we can imagine it wasn’t easy!

Our Art Club has received much needed funding from Awards for All which was cause for celebration as funding had run out earlier on in the year and we were running it on thin air and goodwill from volunteers.

We are currently planning our Centre Launch Event to coincide with Redditch Mental Health Action Groups ‘Redditch Wellbeing Week’. Our event will be on Friday 11th October 2013 12midday – 5pm. We believe that being an active part in your community has huuuge impact on your positive mental health. Our centre will be open for anyone and everyone to see what we have to offer and have a cup of tea and a chat.

Our European Social Funding has now come to an end and we are so pleased with the projects results. In total we supported 13 people to volunteer in their local communities gaining skills and experience which would be of benefit in the workplace. Many of the volunteers have since secured work or are well on the way into employment or training. We have even managed to offer 2 of the volunteers jobs within our own project.

This summer our Spectrum Reviews site hit its 1000 views milestone! The site is run by members of the Spectrum project who write reviews and manage the site. It has been gaining momentum and is now over 1,200 views. Please check out the site for yourself –
