Art Club head to Hollywood (Bowl of course)

The end of term for the Art Club can only mean one thing… time for a reward trip for their hard work at Your Ideas.

As there is no funding available through the Art Club grant for reward trips, we have to find something fun but cheap! Luckily for us the staff at the Hollywood Bowl in Great Park Rubery were very accommodating and offered us a great group discount for our visit.  Continue reading

First of the Wish List orders to arrive!

Christmas came early this year- March in fact, when we received a 20 box strong order of art materials from Seawhite of Brighton. I have uploaded a few photo’s of the order in a slideshow, it’s not even all of what we received so you can imagine how much turned up!

If you have been following our blog you will remember hearing about a generous donor that came forward to fund plenty of lovely resources for our project.

“Find out what kids are good at. It will change their lives”

If you haven’t already seen or heard British rapper Plan B’s speech at TEDxObserver this month then now is your chance. We watched it at ‘Your Ideas’ last week and were inspired by his honesty and enthusiasm to help youngsters in need.

Art-angel Gabriel of Matchborough

The last few weeks have been busy for our Arrow Vale students as they have been working hard to recycle an old mannequin into an art-angel at ‘Your Ideas’.

It all started with a mannequin from the Worcester Resource Exchange…

  • We then sanded the mannequin down and spray painted it metallic gold.
  • Then came the blue and gold beaded highlighted hair and the tribal-esque tattoo on his upper back.
  • His chest was then embellished with coins from a mix of different countries (some were eyed up by local youngsters thinking they could use them at the local chippy!).
  • We then started a patterned tattoo leg sleeve to add to his eclectic look.
  • A visit from artist Callum Marshall gave Gabriel an incredible set of life size wings using wood, wire, cling film and tissue paper.
  • The next stage will be to paper mache the wings, spray paint them gold and add designs on them. Then we will work on covering the rest of his body.

I’m sure you will agree that he is already an impressive addition to our project, we can’t wait to see him finished so we can display him in our window for all of Matchborough to see!

Our Big Beautiful Birmingham Based Botanical Visit

On Friday we enjoyed an afternoon at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens with members from our 50+ WIG group.

Even on a grey day in early March the gardens were brimming with greenery and beauty and it was refreshing to spend time in the great British outdoors.

We even found time to stop at the tea rooms on the terrace and enjoy a cup of tea and a scone – how very quaint!

It is important for us to take our groups on days out as a change of scenery makes a big difference to our members who have travel limitations as they rarely get the opportunity to leave Redditch. Many have barriers in mobility, finance and lack of local transport which means their experiences are limited. With the use of our minibus we are able to provide these valuable opportunities for our members.

The future of the WIG group is currently up in the air as we are waiting to hear back about further funding, we are hopeful that we can continue this work as it has been a huge success – we will keep you updated either way.

Eggy Fun at Your Ideas

What an Eggceptional Community Eggstravaganza.

Hereford and Worcester fire-fighters brought their firefit challenge to Your Ideas on Friday.

I’m always pleased when we do work in our local community but today I learnt an important lesson.

It’s the simple things that let people participate in support  of their community that really matter. Continue reading

So that’s what a Mayor does

I never really understood what mayors did.

That was until I saw Anita Clayton in action at our Fire Fit challenge (a 2.5 hour egg and spoon fundraising egg-stravaganza see the next post) .

Anita starts the fire fit challenge

She opened the event up, took part, cheered participants on for over two and a half hours and then gave out certificates. With her support 37 people and and one dog took part. They covered over 45 miles and raised over £200 with another £200 pledged. All of the money will go towards our With It Group (our over 50’s group). Continue reading

Caught on camera at Your Ideas!

I raided the webcam pics at Your Ideas this week and found a collection of photos that I had to share.

Here you can witness some of the unusual going ons at the project and what happens when young people find out how to use the photobooth on our Macs! (These are only the ones on my computer, will upload some more beauties if I can stealth them off other ones ;))

Enjoy!! 🙂
