September snapshot!

Apologies for the lack of posts the last few months, we have had a manic time to say the least. As you will know from previous posts we have just moved our project to a new premises which has taken up a huge amount of effort. We are now  settling in so hopefully we will have more time to keep the blog updated!

Long overdue update from Your Ideas

We are now back in the centre after a well needed summer break.

It was slightly manic before we broke up for summer as always, especially with the end of term trips for each group. The photos are too good not to share though so I will do a belated post soon.

Over the summer we have had a few big changes to the project with the school group ceasing for the meantime as the school is going through big changes as it becomes an academy.

Our With It Group for residents aged over 50 has been successfully handed over to Alan Walker who will now be running the group. The group will continue on the same day and will still run from our centre.

Our ever popular Art Club for local youngsters will continue to run as usual with the youngsters having the opportunity to create art work to be displayed at the newly refurbished Abbey Stadium, or try their hand at creating something truly terrifying for our notorious Halloween window display.

During our closure a team of volunteers snuck in and decorated the toilets and paint room which was in dire need of some work as they were dark and miserable! I’d like to thank Ryan Edwards, Jordan Cooke, Mick Fitzgerald, Richard Underwood and Michael Fitzgerald for giving up their time, skills and materials to help out.

Before…
After…

As always we are waiting to hear back from various funders that we have applied for funding from so we are excited and nervous to see how that will shape the future of the project and how we develop. Cross your fingers and toes for us and we will update when we hear more!

With great changes to youth provision in Redditch due to the massive cuts in the statutory centre we are sad to hear that  2 of the 3 council run youth centres have now closed and the decision on the third is still up in the air. This has put a massive dent in Redditch youth provision which makes it ever more interesting to see how the Worcestershire County Council will choose to spend the small amount of money left allocated to commission young peoples services. Fingers crossed we are successful on our bid!

Think that is all for now, thanks for reading 🙂

Redditch Young Advisors Training

3 of our brilliant youngsters attended the Worcestershire Young Advisor Training Day on the 20th May at Upton Warren, this meant an early morning wake up call of 9.30am on a Sunday morning, ouch!

The morning involved learning about the commissioning of positive activities money in Redditch for young people. One of the activities was to list all the problems in their local areas…

They then had to look at how to solve these problems with the commissioning money available. We were so proud of our youngsters as they thought of very valid problems and some excellent solutions, not bad for a sunday 😉

Your Ideas Redditch Update

So it’s time for an update on what’s been going on at Your Ideas Redditch headquarters…

-Two of our amazing members applied for and received a grant to work with other local youngsters in a project named ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’. The grant is from the Princes Trust – Ben Kinsella Trust who support youngsters aged 14-25 to set up their own project to help promote anti-gun, knife and gang violence messages to their local community. We are running a series of workshops creating planters and other wooden goodies to be donated to Noahs Ark Nursery in Matchborough.

-On Thursday 2 of our Art Club members went along to the Matchborough Youth Forum meeting to find out more about the group. They visited at the right time as the group were treated to a tour of the town hall – including a question and answer with the Mayor of Redditch Anita Clayton in her parlour! Our members loved it and are planning on getting more involved.

So that’s what a Mayor does

I never really understood what mayors did.

That was until I saw Anita Clayton in action at our Fire Fit challenge (a 2.5 hour egg and spoon fundraising egg-stravaganza see the next post) .

Anita starts the fire fit challenge

She opened the event up, took part, cheered participants on for over two and a half hours and then gave out certificates. With her support 37 people and and one dog took part. They covered over 45 miles and raised over £200 with another £200 pledged. All of the money will go towards our With It Group (our over 50’s group). Continue reading

Lights, camera, action!

On Friday we transformed our lounge room into a film set to record interviews with young people for our Health Improvement Fund short films. We are looking to document young peoples opinions on sexual health and relationships in the digital story format. Chris Bradley the film maker was excellent as always and we can’t wait to see the edited versions.

The final products will be shown in schools and youth establishments as an SRE resource made by young people, for young people.

Here are a few sneaky pics, including some of the lads striking some poses in front of the backdrop – they just couldn’t help themselves!

Wishes do come true!

Second post of the day, getting a bit too into this blogging malarky!!

Today was spent sorting out resources for some cool upcoming projects including some 3d wooden sculptures, mosaics, big canvasses and a ridiculous amounts of other recycled art. Any ideas of what to make out of old ties are welcome!

The rest of the day was spent gleefully scouring art catalogues and the internet, and for once it wasn’t wishful window shopping!

Just before Christmas we were blessed with our version of the Secret Millionaire (well as close as we are going to come to one), as a property developer asked us to get together a wish list of resources we need for the centre.
