It’s June already?!

Apologies for the lack of posts recently, we have doubled our workload this year and have really struggled to find time to keep the blog up to date!

The two big projects that we have been getting off the ground this year are –

-Support Across the Spectrum which is funded by The Big Lottery Fund and enables us to work with young people aged 15-25 who have Asperger’s to reduce social isolation.

Long overdue update from Your Ideas

We are now back in the centre after a well needed summer break.

It was slightly manic before we broke up for summer as always, especially with the end of term trips for each group. The photos are too good not to share though so I will do a belated post soon.

Over the summer we have had a few big changes to the project with the school group ceasing for the meantime as the school is going through big changes as it becomes an academy.

Our With It Group for residents aged over 50 has been successfully handed over to Alan Walker who will now be running the group. The group will continue on the same day and will still run from our centre.

Our ever popular Art Club for local youngsters will continue to run as usual with the youngsters having the opportunity to create art work to be displayed at the newly refurbished Abbey Stadium, or try their hand at creating something truly terrifying for our notorious Halloween window display.

During our closure a team of volunteers snuck in and decorated the toilets and paint room which was in dire need of some work as they were dark and miserable! I’d like to thank Ryan Edwards, Jordan Cooke, Mick Fitzgerald, Richard Underwood and Michael Fitzgerald for giving up their time, skills and materials to help out.

Before…
After…

As always we are waiting to hear back from various funders that we have applied for funding from so we are excited and nervous to see how that will shape the future of the project and how we develop. Cross your fingers and toes for us and we will update when we hear more!

With great changes to youth provision in Redditch due to the massive cuts in the statutory centre we are sad to hear that  2 of the 3 council run youth centres have now closed and the decision on the third is still up in the air. This has put a massive dent in Redditch youth provision which makes it ever more interesting to see how the Worcestershire County Council will choose to spend the small amount of money left allocated to commission young peoples services. Fingers crossed we are successful on our bid!

Think that is all for now, thanks for reading 🙂

Fix Up Look Sharp!

As you may of heard in previous posts, two of our awesome regulars applied for a community cash award from the Prince’s Trust to work with other local youngsters, they named the project ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’.

This funding came from the Ben Kinsella Trust who are working in partnership to support youngsters aged 14-25 to set up their own project to help promote anti-gun, knife and gang violence messages to their local community. Our young people are running a series of workshops creating planters and other wooden goodies to be donated to Noahs Ark Nursery in Matchborough. They wanted to promote positive activities for young people while raising awareness of the reality of gun and knife crime in the UK and the affect it has on young peoples lives.

Risk assessing ready for the sessions!

Easter Art Club Bonanza

So we are back in the centre after the madness of our Easter holiday art sessions, after a big tidy and sort out we are back to some sort of normality!

Our Easter art sessions comprised of 3 consecutive days of art activities with local youngsters to create masterpieces for our upcoming display as funded by Grants for Arts.

Artist Rich Inwood shared his graffiti skills with the youngsters by constructing a huge mural using 4 large boards, copious amounts of paint and lots of time.

As you can imagine the centre looked like it had been hit by a colourful tornado by the end of the week and we had created some incredible work. Over 300 photos were taken as the camera was passed around the centre over the 3 days, check out the slideshow below to see what we got up to…

Art Club head to Hollywood (Bowl of course)

The end of term for the Art Club can only mean one thing… time for a reward trip for their hard work at Your Ideas.

As there is no funding available through the Art Club grant for reward trips, we have to find something fun but cheap! Luckily for us the staff at the Hollywood Bowl in Great Park Rubery were very accommodating and offered us a great group discount for our visit.  Continue reading

Lights, camera, action!

On Friday we transformed our lounge room into a film set to record interviews with young people for our Health Improvement Fund short films. We are looking to document young peoples opinions on sexual health and relationships in the digital story format. Chris Bradley the film maker was excellent as always and we can’t wait to see the edited versions.

The final products will be shown in schools and youth establishments as an SRE resource made by young people, for young people.

Here are a few sneaky pics, including some of the lads striking some poses in front of the backdrop – they just couldn’t help themselves!

When Art Attacks at Your Ideas Redditch

One of our regular members came in last week inspired by something he had seen created on Art Attack. We left him to his own devices and pointed him in the direction of resources he would ask for every now and then, until he came up with this beauty! It just needs some last finishing touches and it will be complete, and a welcome addition to the Your Ideas Redditch project.

Using tiny pieces to create masterpieces.

Our Art Club have started work on their mosaic project by recycling old canvasses using wallpaper paste, random scraps of paper, old cds and glitter to produce mini masterpieces.

These pieces are now on display in our window at the Your Ideas Redditch headquarters in Matchborough. We will be updating the window display often to showcase the work the art club are creating so please pop by and check it out 🙂

You wood’nt believe what we made on Tuesday…

Tuesday showed the return of our Arrow Vale Students and the challenge of creating wooden garden items. The first challenge was a wooden plant holder which was a success!

The next challenge was to make a miniature garden chair/plant holder but unfortunately the nails were too short and the wood too thick which was a recipe for disaster 😦 Below shows the aftermath of the groups efforts…

Saving the planet, one cardboard creature at a time..

Today we got cracking with the first recycling project of the year, with the help of one enthusiastic but bored young man. What started as an innocent conversation, ended in a 2 hour Art Attack style craft session. Here are the fruits of our labour!

Just need to paint them and find a way of fixing them to our ever expanding wall mural now, will post a pic when I figure out how :).
