It’s June already?!

Apologies for the lack of posts recently, we have doubled our workload this year and have really struggled to find time to keep the blog up to date!

The two big projects that we have been getting off the ground this year are –

-Support Across the Spectrum which is funded by The Big Lottery Fund and enables us to work with young people aged 15-25 who have Asperger’s to reduce social isolation.

On your marks, get set, BLOG!

As part of our ever expanding Support Across the Spectrum project funded by the Big Lottery our members have created their very own blog. It is for our Spectrum members to upload reviews of anything and everything!

Spectrum member and volunteer Tom is the webmaster who created the blog, writes reviews and also supports other members to not only write their own reviews but teaches them how to upload them too.

The reviews are generally about computer games, movies and music at the moment as that’s what interests our members. They are all written reviews at the moment but we are currently working on some video interview style reviews too, thanks to our new video camera donated by Phil Haslam of HSL Roadside.

We now have 4 reviewers who are uploading to the site and already have more who are interested in getting involved.

If you or anyone you know has Aspergers and would be interested in getting involved then contact us for more information – kayleighfitzgerald@yourideas.org.uk or 01527 502624

Here at Your Ideas we got SAS!

In November we kicked off our Support Across the Spectrum project which is a development of our existing Spectrum Club sessions. We were successful in receiving funding for the next 5 years by the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund (whoohoo!!) The Spectrum Club for those who don’t already know is our work with youngsters who have Aspergers Syndrome.

So this meant the Spectrum Club went from fortnightly Thursday evening sessions for younger (Spectrum Orange) and older (Spectrum Red) members to weekly sessions for both groups and much much more…

The Support Across the Spectrum project has three main aims-

1) Reduce isolation of people with ASD

2) Increase independence of people with ASD

3) Increase mental and physical well being of people with ASD

This is taking the form of weekly friendship groups, weekly drop in, group trips, internal and external volunteering opportunities, film projects, festivals, steering group, review website, monthly social games console nights, healthy lifestyle and independent living skills activities and projects and much more!

Check out the slideshow below to see for yourself what we have already been up to with our brilliant Spectrum project…

Children in Need donations making a difference in Redditch

It’s that time of year again when people start raising funds for the much publicized annual Children in Need campaign. Our project is no different and this year our Spectrum Club members are planning a Halloween party fundraiser.

We have been incredibly fortunate as a project to have benefited financially from this campaign when we received 3 year funding for our ever popular Spectrum Club. Continue reading

Long overdue update from Your Ideas

We are now back in the centre after a well needed summer break.

It was slightly manic before we broke up for summer as always, especially with the end of term trips for each group. The photos are too good not to share though so I will do a belated post soon.

Over the summer we have had a few big changes to the project with the school group ceasing for the meantime as the school is going through big changes as it becomes an academy.

Our With It Group for residents aged over 50 has been successfully handed over to Alan Walker who will now be running the group. The group will continue on the same day and will still run from our centre.

Our ever popular Art Club for local youngsters will continue to run as usual with the youngsters having the opportunity to create art work to be displayed at the newly refurbished Abbey Stadium, or try their hand at creating something truly terrifying for our notorious Halloween window display.

During our closure a team of volunteers snuck in and decorated the toilets and paint room which was in dire need of some work as they were dark and miserable! I’d like to thank Ryan Edwards, Jordan Cooke, Mick Fitzgerald, Richard Underwood and Michael Fitzgerald for giving up their time, skills and materials to help out.

Before…
After…

As always we are waiting to hear back from various funders that we have applied for funding from so we are excited and nervous to see how that will shape the future of the project and how we develop. Cross your fingers and toes for us and we will update when we hear more!

With great changes to youth provision in Redditch due to the massive cuts in the statutory centre we are sad to hear that  2 of the 3 council run youth centres have now closed and the decision on the third is still up in the air. This has put a massive dent in Redditch youth provision which makes it ever more interesting to see how the Worcestershire County Council will choose to spend the small amount of money left allocated to commission young peoples services. Fingers crossed we are successful on our bid!

Think that is all for now, thanks for reading 🙂

Fix Up Look Sharp!

As you may of heard in previous posts, two of our awesome regulars applied for a community cash award from the Prince’s Trust to work with other local youngsters, they named the project ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’.

This funding came from the Ben Kinsella Trust who are working in partnership to support youngsters aged 14-25 to set up their own project to help promote anti-gun, knife and gang violence messages to their local community. Our young people are running a series of workshops creating planters and other wooden goodies to be donated to Noahs Ark Nursery in Matchborough. They wanted to promote positive activities for young people while raising awareness of the reality of gun and knife crime in the UK and the affect it has on young peoples lives.

Risk assessing ready for the sessions!

Your Ideas Redditch Update

So it’s time for an update on what’s been going on at Your Ideas Redditch headquarters…

-Two of our amazing members applied for and received a grant to work with other local youngsters in a project named ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’. The grant is from the Princes Trust – Ben Kinsella Trust who support youngsters aged 14-25 to set up their own project to help promote anti-gun, knife and gang violence messages to their local community. We are running a series of workshops creating planters and other wooden goodies to be donated to Noahs Ark Nursery in Matchborough.

-On Thursday 2 of our Art Club members went along to the Matchborough Youth Forum meeting to find out more about the group. They visited at the right time as the group were treated to a tour of the town hall – including a question and answer with the Mayor of Redditch Anita Clayton in her parlour! Our members loved it and are planning on getting more involved.

Too much art, not enough space!

The Art Club have been working so hard for their upcoming exhibition that they have been creating work at an alarming rate.

We now have so much art work so we will have a tough job choosing what to exhibit!

Here is a snapshot of what they get up to at the club and their latest creations, coming to an exhibition space near you soon… If you live near Redditch that is! Enjoy!
