So it’s time for an update on what’s been going on at Your Ideas Redditch headquarters…
-Two of our amazing members applied for and received a grant to work with other local youngsters in a project named ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’. The grant is from the Princes Trust – Ben Kinsella Trust who support youngsters aged 14-25 to set up their own project to help promote anti-gun, knife and gang violence messages to their local community. We are running a series of workshops creating planters and other wooden goodies to be donated to Noahs Ark Nursery in Matchborough.
-On Thursday 2 of our Art Club members went along to the Matchborough Youth Forum meeting to find out more about the group. They visited at the right time as the group were treated to a tour of the town hall – including a question and answer with the Mayor of Redditch Anita Clayton in her parlour! Our members loved it and are planning on getting more involved.
-Our With It Group enjoyed a talk from an energy saving expert who offered practical help and advice on how to save money on energy bills. They then tried their luck in a beetle drive game and lucky member Val was victorious.
-We were visited by Worcestershires Youth Voice Development Worker Kirsty Fraser who came to speak to our youngsters about becoming Young Commissioning Advisors. The advisors will work with Councillors to decide how to spend money for young people in their local areas. 3 of our members have put themselves forward and are looking forward to attending a training day this Sunday. We were keen for our youngsters to be involved as they are often left without a voice as they are deemed ‘hard to reach’ and difficult to engage with.
-The Red Spectrum Club has formed a steering group who will be helping us consult with their peers in a more effective way, as one member put it – “People ask us (youngsters with ASD) questions and don’t like the answers we give and discard them, but usually they are just asking us the wrong questions.” We couldn’t agree more which is why we have handed over the reigns and asked them to document their thoughts, feelings and opinions on what they want and how they want to be consulted with in the medium of film.
-Our Orange Spectrum Club is growing in numbers by the week with referrals from Peartree and word of mouth, luckily we have great volunteers who have enabled us to increase the numbers but not decrease the quality!
-Arrow Vale students have been busy creating artwork in the centre which is hopefully going to be displayed in Arrow Vale Foyer. They have also been working on a large mosaic and large 3d tree which are to be displayed alongside the Art Clubs exhibition this summer. They have also had several visits from a Substance Misuse worker who delivered interactive sessions on alcohol, drugs and smoking.
-The Art Club have been making finishing touches to their exhibition work and are now starting to work hard creating pieces to be entered into a Your Ideas Redditch Art Club competition.
-To ensure our lovely project will make it to 2013 we have been busy bid writing and we are very optimistic we will be successful, so fingers and toes crossed that we are right 🙂
And finally our blog has now had over 2000 hits! So thank you for reading, we really do appreciate it 😀
We’d send a homemade thank you cake but they all got eaten, oops!
